The high cost of Wind Turbines. Why not build your own.

Homemade wind turbine? Surely that would be too difficult.

No, not at all. You will be amazed at how easy it is to build
your own wind turbine. And the best bit is it will save you a
fortune.

I am lucky enough(or unlucky enough) depending on your viewpoint
to live totally off the grid in a remote area in Spain. When i
first moved here a lot of money had to be spent on solar panels
and a wind generator.I wish i had the knowledge then!

Even not having to pay for my electricity i am aware from
friends and family and constant price rises reported on the news
that the cost of electricity has skyrocketed. Renewable energy
is more and more becoming the way to go.. The problem of course
is wind turbine prices have also risen so it is difficult to
afford for most people. The economics simply don't stack up. It
takes years to see a return on the initial price paid for a good
wind generator.

But if you make your own then that's a different story. If you
could harness wind power for a fraction of the cost then i am
sure it would be a more viable option for many people. well you
can.
Wind generator construction may seem like a daunting idea but
the information i found makes having a home built wind generator
very viable. You can source what you need locally and cheaply
and have a fun time building a turbine and reaping the benefits
of the air all around you.

Start saving on electricity bills and boast to your friends
about your home built wind generator.

Home Wind Turbines--How To Build A Wind Turbine

Title: Home Wind Turbines--How To Build A Wind Turbine

Author: John Mowatt

Article:
In the USA natural gas was the biggest source of new energy in
2007. This was followed by wind energy power production. At
years end 2007 wind turbines were producing in excess of 16000
megawatts of electric power and about one third of that capacity
came on line in 2007. Big commercial turbines produce most of
this power but an increasing amount is coming from the small
turbine owned by individuals. The home wind turbine is the wave
of the future as people take steps to reduce their use of power
produced by fossil fuel burning generators. A major source of
atmospheric pollution is emissions from coal and gas fueled
power plants.

Wind power by comparision is absolutely clean and the only
objectiion to it,voiced by some people,is visual pollution from
the arrays of wind turbines necessary for large scale power
production. However the residential wind turbine poses no such
problems. Small scale wind power generation is acheived with
small and unobtrusive home wind turbines. A combination of home
solar panels-wind turbines can produce much of the power
required by the average home. Small wind powered turbines are
manufactured by a number of companies and can be readily set up
either as a rooftop wind turbine or mounted on its own small
tower. The recommended tower height is about 30 feet. These are
relatively expensive but will pay for themselves in the course
of time.
If you know how to build a wind turbine your home wind turbine
will cost much less and fortunately this is fairly easy to do.
Plans and instructions showing how to build your own wind
turbine are readily available and thousands of people have built
their own home made wind turbine. You will often be told that
strong winds are needed for wind power generation. This is
absolutely not so. Even gentle breezes will produce power which
is stored in batteries till needed.

If you live far from electric power lines you either get by with
no electric power or generate your own. Gasoline powered
generators will do the job but they are expensive to run and
heavy polluters. You may be fortunate enough to have a stream
which can generate power for you using a water power system but
these are usually difficult to build and expensive. The best
answer is a wind turbine in most cases. You can in fact build
your own wind turbine for much less than the price of a
commercial model. You could install two or three of them and
have plenty of power for all purposes. Building your own home
wind turbine is a fairly simple project which the average home
workshopper can easily manage. Wind power reduces atmospheric
pollution and will save you money. It is the coming thing for the
immediate future. Why not try it?

What is a wind turbine and it's history?

Title: What is a wind turbine and it's history?

Author: Jeanne Kvarfordt

Article:
What is a wind turbine? Where did it come from?

There are actually many definitions of a wind turbine and many
different uses. For our purposes we will stay very basic, as I
assume this is information for someone who has no prior
knowledge.

The best way to describe it is this:

A machine that captures the energy of the wind and transfers the
motion to an electric generator shaft.

The history of the wind turbine is fascinating actually. The
first windmills were developed to automate the tasks of
grain-grinding and water-pumping. The first system was actually
developed in Persia about 500-900 A.D and the first documented
design was also from Persia. Grain grinding was the first
documented wind mill application. Vertical-axis windmills were
also used in China, which is often claimed as their birthplace.
The earliest actually documentation of a Chinese windmill was in
1219 A.D. by Chinese statesman Yehlu Chhu-Tshai. One of the most
scenic and successful application of wind power is the use of
water pumping machines on the island of Crete. There are
literally hundreds to pump water for crops and livestock. (find
more detailed information on www.telosnet.com/wind/early.html).
There is a role for smaller system wind turbines, especially to
help the average, every day American save money on power and
contribute to cleaner energy. Wind resource is a constant for
the life of the machine, there is never not enough of it! Wind
is not subject to manipulation or cost increases. Mother Nature
has provided it beautifully FREE. I believe, in the near future
that wind energy will be the most cost effective source of
electrical power. You can use wind power for your benefit and
for the planet's.

Would you build yourself a wind turbine?

Title: Would you build yourself a wind turbine?

Author: Erwin Cod

Article:
Wind turbines are one of the best tools to harness the power of
the wind. Look at the wind from this point of view. It is the
most enduring sources of power. You go to bed with a light
breeze hitting your window pane and you wake up with it blowing
in your face.

You drive your car to work and it blows your hair and give you a
nice refreshing feel. Even when your eyes are groggy it touches
that spot and brings you back to life. The trees seem to enjoy
it because they dance as it blows. The birds they fly around in
it all day.

It is here to stay it never leaves. Isn't that what you would
consider a good source of energy to be. It is friendly with
nature, it does not pollute and most of all it is free. You can
have it whenever you want. As the quote by Victor Hugo says
"Madame, bear in mind That princes govern all things, save the
wind."

It can be harnessed by huge wind farms or by a simple turbine in
your backyard. Would you doubt the power of the wind. I will ask
again would you build yourself a wind turbine?

Wind Turbines For Renewable Energy

Title: Wind Turbines For Renewable Energy

Author: John Mahoney

Article:
Wind turbines are rotating machines made for the sole purpose of
turning kinetic energy generated by wind into a renewable source
of mechanical energy; which in turn can be used for other
purposes, such as converting into electricity. Direct use of
that mechanical energy makes the machine a wind mill, while
conversion to electricity renders it a machine called by any of
the following names: wind generators, wind turbines, wind power
units (WPU), or wind energy converters (WEC).

The basic technology have been in use for many centuries now,
but the main focus for this seemingly-ancient technology
nowadays is its sought function as an alternative method of
generating power in form of WPU's. While its purpose is clean
cut, there is still much to be done before it can be used as a
viable alternative to oil, coal, and nuclear power. This has a
lot to do with current concerns about the environment and the
impending depletion of fossil fuels, making wind turbines one of
the main focuses of the green movement as a source of renewable
energy.

Modern wind turbines have two types: horizontal axis wind
turbines (HAWT) and vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT). The
former is the one most well-known with windmills as a classic
example. Advantages of HAWT's are that of structural stability,
variable blade pitch, and its versatility in terms of being able
to catch winds by being built in elevation and its ability to be
feathered in case of storms. It disadvantages include
difficulties in installation, operation, maintenance, and
transportation. VAWT's fare better in terms of the HAWT's
disadvantages, since they don't need to be built very high up.
However, they can't match up in terms of efficiency and
stability.

Wind turbines are a definite part of the world's ongoing quest
for energy alternatives with good reason. Obvious advantages are
that of renewable energy and apparent lack of environmental
risk. Since it has been used throughout human history, it is a
tested theory. It is accessible technology that works by the
basic principles that most people who have actually paid
attention to their science class in grade school can understand.

However, there are also disadvantages that are worth noting.
First is that of cost, since numerous wind turbines are required
to generate a significant amount of usable energy proportionate
to the size of the community. Also, they aren't exactly gentle
as there have been numerous cases of “wind turbine syndrome”
resulting from the constant loud noise that can affect nearby
residents. Symptoms can include sleeping problems, headaches,
exhaustion, irritability, dizziness, and so on. Also, location
is a big problem since a windy place is a necessity " with
winds strong enough to turn the blades of each and every turbine.

While wind turbines are definitely a good idea to implement,
much has yet to be understood and discovered before it can
actually be a viable source of energy in today's world. The best
solution right now to alleviate energy woes is to combine this
with different alternative solutions to maximize effect and
replace traditional fossil fuel-driven methods of generating
power. While a total solution is yet to be found, it is
definitely within reach.

Build a Wind Turbine--Generate Clean Green Power

Title: Build a Wind Turbine--Generate Clean Green Power

Author: John Mowatt

Article:
The best source of alternative energy at present is undoubtedly
the wind turbine. Non polluting, they can generate most of our
power requirements. They are in fact the primary souce of
electric power in some areas of the world. The individual
consumer can quite easily generate 100% of his power needs from
the wind.

There are other interesting alternative energy sources. Solar
power is one method of power production which shows great
promise and is being used increasingly. Solar cells are however
expensive and power output is limited. For this reason solar
power is presently an auxiliary power supply in most cases.

Nuclear power stations are widely used around the globe. The
United Kingdom and France generate a large part of their
electricity supply this way. The main obstacle to increased use
of nuclear power is public distrust of this method of power
generation. The accidents at Chernobyl and Three mile Island in
particular have caused much fear and dislike for nuclear power
generation. Wind power is acceptable to most communities with
the only undesirable feature being the visual pollution caused
by large areas covered with big turbines.

The addition of one or two turbines can make a home or farm
independent of the local power utility. Many suppliers now sell
these turbines in all areas. They are fairly costly
unfortunately but over time will pay for their cost and show a
saving to the owner.

You can build a wind turbine yourself rather than purchasing
one. This is quite a simple project using plans with
instructions which are available. The cost is only a fraction of
the price of a commercial wind turbine . This technology was
widely in use in rural areas in the 1930 to 1950s era. Since
then it has largely died out since modern consumers are less
cost conscious and will pay the power company rather than
generate theit own power.

At this time it is becoming increasingly obvious to most that we
must find less polluting ways to generate our power needs.
Generating stations fired by oil,gas and coal are heavy
polluters. We must replace them with clean green power
generation. Wind power is the most obvious alternative at the
present time. The individual consumer can do his part by
installing a wind turbine or more than one on his propery.

A home built wind turbine made from auto parts and a few odds
and ends is quite inexpensive and one or more of them can
generate all or most of the power needed. They can be roof
mounted on a building or free standing on their own tower. It is
a misconception that continuous strong winds are needed to
generate electricity. Even a light breeze will spin the turbine.
Power can be stored in storage batteries till needed for use.
Any excess power generated can be sold to the local power
company in many areas.Wind turbine power generation is the best solution available to
consumers today. All of us who are concerned about the future of
our planet need to get aboard now by building or buying a wind
turbine to provide some of our power needs. The most inexpensive
way to do this is to build your own turbine.

Norwegian Company to Build Huge Offshore Floating Wind Turbine

Title: Norwegian Company to Build Huge Offshore Floating Wind Turbine

Author: Peter Verhoeff

Article:
A Norwegian company, StatoilHydro, is planning to build Hywind,
a floating wind turbine about 10 kilometers off the West coast
of Norway. Hywind is to be the first full-scale biofriendly
floating wind turbine. It will be built using existing offshore
technologies. “We have drawn on our offshore expertise from
the oil and gas industry to develop wind power offshore,”
states Alexandra Bech Gjørv, head of New Energy in
StatoilHydro. (1)

The wind turbine will be located in the open sea, because there
the winds are stronger and more consistent. A 3-meter high
prototype scale model was developed and tested in 2005. It
turned out to be very successful and operated reliably in
extremely adverse weather conditions.

The full-sized version is scheduled to become operational in
2009. The 2.3 MW wind turbine, made by Siemens, the
Germany-based electronics giant, will be located on a mast atop
a floating platform that will be moored to the seabed with three
anchor points. The rotor blades of the turbine will be 80 meters
(244 feet) in diameter and centered 65 meters (198 feet) above
sea level.

The floating concrete platform installation can be operated in
waters between 120 to 700 meters (366 to 2,134 feet) deep. It is
to be assembled on land and towed out to sea with a tugboat,
where it will be moored about 10 kilometers offshore. Cables on
the seabed will conduct the generated electrical power from the
turbines to the shore.

The purpose of this project is to test the feasibility of
deep-water floating wind turbines, with the object of making
wind power competitive with other power sources. If this pilot
project turns out to be successful, the plan is to establish
vast offshore wind farms of up to 200 turbines producing up to a
thousand megawatts of power.

While the results of the scale model were promising, the
technology of floating wind turbines in the real world yet has
to be proven. To be viable, they must be able to function
reliably, even with big waves and be operated and maintained
safely and economically.

The potential of offshore floating wind turbines is huge. If
successful, it will be able to provide abundant clean energy. At
this early stage many difficulties will need to be overcome and
success will depend largely on ingenuity and available financial
resources.

Many other alternative energy sources are being tested and
developed, as well as methods of utilizing existing sources more
effectively and thus bring about a cleaner, greener planet. One
company, href="http://www.biofriendly-green-plus.com/">Biofriendly
Corporation, has developed a liquid fuel catalyst, called href="http://www.biofriendly-green-plus.com/biofriendly_greenplus
.html">Green Plus®, which causes a cleaner, more linear
burn in internal combustion engines, the result of which is more
torque, fewer harmful emissions and improved fuel economy.
